Day One @ NASA

Day 1 – Monday 18 June 2007

I left for Space camp today. Unfortunately it was a 12:50am flight out of Seattle. All went well, connected in MSP and headed for the Magic Kingdom. I gained my first insights into Orlando with a greeting from Goofy. Across the way I knew I had found what I came for … Space, the Final Frontier. I met up with the colleagues I was to spend my next 10 days with.

We started out with a tour of American icons … Walmart and McDonald’s. There is actually an excellent view of the assembly building and launch pad from Mac’s. I bet the place is full with space aliens or shuttle watchers when there is a space shuttle launch. I wonder if they’ve taken a Big Mac into space?

The people I am with are from around the world. Asia isn’t well represented, a couple from Manila and myself from Hong Kong. There are a lot from Africa, South and Central America, and Europe. I did have dinner with my nephew's, Nate and Stephen, science teacher, they're from the Hague in Holland.

We have a tentative schedule for us. Among our activities will be watching the space shuttle land from on sight –we’re not tourists for this one, we’re really there! How awesome! If you take a tour of the Kennedy Space center, you won’t find us, we’ll be on the floor behind the scenes. In some places we can’t take pictures. If we used a flash, we would set off the fire alarm system and sprinkler’s – it would ruin a few million dollars worth of space stuff. We will also be taking a behind the scene’s tour of Epcot Center in Disney – yup, Mickey and me!

Let the fun … er, learning, begin!
